Asian Education Research

It is officially the "Year of the Rabbit" on the Chinese calendar. But better to be known in 2011 as "Year of the Tiger Mother."
Early in January, published by Yale law professor criticizing Amy Chua coddling parents in western style in the Wall Street Journal, "Why do Chinese mothers feel." Essay, a summary of the book "The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" - which details, among other things, as she raised their daughters in "traditional Chinese", with strict discipline and emphasis on academic success and music lessons, to primarily to prevent the TV, computer games, play dates and sleepovers - set out a media maelstrom. She was welcomed. She was reviled. Many parents wrung their hands. Chua great controversy about parenting, even reaching as far as the summit in Davos, said former Harvard president Larry Summers debate. Columnist David Brooks of The New York Times called a "wimp."
The hullaballoo prompted Valerie Ramey, Professor of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, to ask: What does the data?
Book Chua, said Ramey, struck a nerve in part because of the stereotype of Asian academic success. The statistics back up that stereotype. Recent academic test scores from the Program for International Student Assessment show that four out of five of the top-scoring Asian countries worst affected countries. (Finland is the only non-Asian). In California, Asians represent 12 percent of the graduates, but one third of all admissions at the University of California, and nearly half of all undergraduate admission to UC San Diego.
And why is that? They do better in school as a result, Ramey said, but with better financial results over the long haul: High school performance is an important determinant in admission to college and go to college but revenue rises significantly. Difference in earnings between college graduates and high school, must Ramey, has expanded since the 1980s, and recent U.S. Census figures show that Asians as a group more likely to have college degrees and household incomes are much higher.
To begin to answer the question of whether Asian parents and children differently, Ramey analyzed the American Time Use Survey. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Project, as measured by using the thousands 2003-2009 study time based on time diaries. It includes data on people aged 15 and over, and so just Ramey analyze the use of time for students and parents of high school.

Asian Kid education

Just a few weeks spent in making housing in Jewish school tuition, I happened by chance to meet the father of one of the students. Nothing unusual there, except that he was Asian - as far as I can tell, immigrants from China - not much I can say is one of the chosen people. He was the son of a few students of Chinese background was all I noticed at school.I asked the parent, in tactful way possible, because the Jewish connection. Nobody, he said happily, but he figured it was a good school and it was good enough for him. His son, as far as I can tell, the content and accept it as a rare person of Asian students is overwhelmingly composed of Ashkenazi Jews. The school is pretty secular, but still very proud of their Jewishness and links to Israel, is cultural rather than religious Jews.
In any case, it is still an unusual choice for non-Jewish students Chinese. But Hong Kong has made my friend Helen was born to high school career at a Jewish school in Melbourne as well. She was the only Asian student there. As Chinese parents met recently, Helen's parents probably figured out that Jewish emphasis on high academic achievements bode well for their daughter.
I spent much time in schools, and came to Hindu and Sikh students in Christian schools, which I accept, because they have the best schools in a particular area.
I guess it's not surprising at all, really. Certain Asian cultures on the academic achievements of their children. So, some Asian parents motivated baby once immersed in another religion or culture a small price to pay for first-class education. In fact, they can even watch the exposure of different religious traditions as useful for education.
So, there are some shared values between Jews and Asians on the primacy of education. But if they have the same kind of education?
It happens, good job up there BigWOWO for Jewish cultural value of the humanities as a key element of education in a way that Asians do not usually. I happen to agree. The Jewish school, I noticed a button in the curriculum explicitly teach students to think critically and philosophically from a very early age. I think it's wonderful.
Asian parenting, as though different focus. Amy Chua, the Chinese parenting style (or at least a version thereof) in the titles for the book Battle Hymn of Mother Tiger, it makes quite clear on these pages is to open What are the priorities in the education of their children. Mathematics is great. Piano and / or violin necessary. Drama and sport, not so much. No other instruments, so far. In fact, I had to do a double take the first time I met a young woman of Chinese background that they had learned the piano or violin, but instead had to learn to play the djembe. You do not see many Chinese parents clamoring for their children to learn African drums. Chua ironically husband is Jewish, and raised daughters who see themselves as Jewish, but it is access to education of good Chinese.
As someone with a circle of friends and most Southeast Asians, it goes almost to say that almost everyone I hang out or a university degree or studying for it, and got high grades in school, I was uncomfortable.
But especially among Asians, I notice a lot of business-math-brain and brain and brain of IT, but few brains humanities. What is wrong, it is not difficult to see more perks with a degree in medicine or pharmacy compared to say a Masters in philosophy. But I fear that Asian culture is so obsessed with churning out kids who grow up to have the traditional professions that value, we will lose something in the way of imagination and innovation. Or even the ability to be an interesting conversation.
As stated in Article BigWOWO, and returning to the topic I started this, maybe there is something Asians can learn from the Jewish approach to education. In the U.S., there are ethnic Indians, Japanese and Jews among the top-performing groups of wealth and education, especially Jews achieved their success in a wide range of fields, from hard science into entertainment industry. To my mind, shows that people increase their diverse range of attractions within it, instead of trying to enter all the doctor.

Welcome to my world

Being 21 years as an Asian student, I think you have the qualifications to some of my comments. For Asian students, we are trained to be stored machine. All we have to understand that if we failed in our study, we would be failing in our lives. Our future will not be successful.
However, at least to me, I do not think that the way our life should be determined or dependent on paper - certificates. For me, what matters is the only study on the process to allow us to get more information. I believe that textbooks are the only source of information for us. Typically, Asian students are lack of creativity compared with Western students because only they know how to memorize facts in textbooks.

I do not mean that we should eliminate the examination system, but I want to emphasize the public should not be over-emphasis on examination results.

Asian Educational Mentality

Americans like to believe that they are "1" at all, but what about our education system? According to statistical data requirements, the U.S. educational system to re-evaluate and reorganize a number of ways. The results of standardized tests are far from Asian countries, and what's more, you are our science and math levels and below average Asian scale. But what is really at stake here, not on educational reform must be done, but should be viewed in different perspectives. Western and Eastern philosophies tend to take the big left or right major and must meet some neutral ground. While the Western look to Asia in hopes of restructuring the educational framework, and are looking east to the west of America. Counteractive and runs parallel process. As you achieve the best school in the debate, and twice could not be more different in approach. It can be a bit difficult to approach this topic without stereotypes of East and West. However, although the most obvious difference of philosophies of East and West. Implications of Eastern hard work, success and education obligations are capitalized and strongly emphasized in Asian philosophies. Not to say that the Western view of this emphasis, but it is much lighter and not as intense. Each of Asian background and personal experience or know someone who grew up a strict schedule of study, taking notes and learning the courses are taught in classes and even teach after school. Academic and extracurricular activities noted in the Asian philosophy of education and audit not only in Western countries.
On the other hand, Asia is also looking towards the west as a model in education. What I think is different here, to imitate our models of teaching, but to join the west in addition to educational paradigm and rigorous framework. Education in Asia can be very intense, high pressure, stress, and suppression in some cases. In its most extreme, it is clear that any educational approach to be successful as they are too strict in any way. Not many Asian countries are trying to find ways to other types of creative fun pressure, and less involvement of higher education in the lives of children. Parenting can be a great addition dominates the eastern countries, but they are certainly looking Western philosophies at the expense of academics.
Perhaps educational change to be happy if we can learn to take each part means and method, more control and require less education. As American universities the envy of all countries, it seems that we are doing the right thing, in our own way. What we need to reassess what America needs in Asian countries seem to be excellent - in science, dedication, determination, mathematics, etc. Anyone can develop and instill a strong work ethic and are combing through the Eastern and Western philosophies that we both can learn from and improve.

What is solution for higher education in Asia?

The higher education systems in Asia, Latin America and Africa prominent similarities to those in Europe. Historically, adopted Latin America, notably in Southeast Asia, and Africa on the system to provide settlers also a lot of funding, teachers, and ideologies in higher education at some point in history. A clear impose colonial masters, much of the language in Latin America that use Spanish usage, in Asia and Africa English to French. The American higher education became more powerful after the start of the twentieth century as the main stress research university. Otherwise, the American system the first introduction of the massification of education adopted by many countries worldwide. Higher education institutions now put emphasis on mass higher education, as a result of increased access to higher education.

Of course, the emerging countries in urgent need of a forum to discuss possible models for higher education for the South, particularly the Commonwealth countries where a majority of one billion live up. Countries from the South, especially in Asian countries to adapt models from Europe and the United States for years, they ran from the adoption of voluntary or influenced by external factors. Instead of borrowing from Western models and put them to try, go through the whole process of testing methods, and experiments, the same amount of time and effort used to assess the feasibility of determining model to connect the south south. The model consists of elements of the area, still looking for the cultural values and wise. Globalisation should not and internationalization of higher education to take the cost of local knowledge.

In particular, the efforts do not detach themselves from the clutches of the new model dominating the West as evidenced by implementation of national languages in higher education through Malaysia and Indonesia. However, the basic model is practiced in Asian countries is still biased towards the European model / American. This factor contributed to the marginal status of Asian institutions of higher education and the rapid globalization, it would be the so-called institutions of higher education in central Europe / USA is still dominant, especially in the context of the internationalization of higher education. In fact, Malaysia has recently started to embrace the English language after many years of experimenting with the Malay language as the language of instruction in public higher education institutions. How to get there Asia / indigenous development models for higher education?
The Asian model in mind we are deeply rooted in the belief that even within the framework of the globalization process by each individual country, it provides sufficient reason to relook and rethink higher education system is heavily biased to the European model / American . Can the current educational model adopted by many countries in the South, are characterized by Western ideologies tailored to fit local needs, but what works so far adapted to the new need to improve the circumstances of each country needs to do reflection. It was not a time when the face of higher education in the South and more opportunities than challenges the current economic downturn global presence. We are in urgent need of models that can handle the unique situation in Asia in terms of quality and accountability and funding mechanism to reduced public funding. On this date answers to these challenges in a European character / American: corporatisation / privatization of higher education, higher education management based on the entrepreneurial approach, competition within the higher education sector and the likely rise higher as commodities. Can the key issues mentioned above to be under one umbrella in the world of higher education, but a closer inspection would have different content for different regions are subject to social, political pressure, economic and national expression.
Proves the accuracy of the growth paths of the existing system of higher education, led the European model / American challenge of how long the current model is based on South-South relations, one that has some differences from those in the north. Basically, you might want to look at the world ranking system of universities and the idea of world class universities, as recommended by the North more than the number of concepts or attempt to standardize the university rather than to the various aspects of each university respected within their national socio-political context.

Real facts about Singapore education

I suggest you read my post carefully. Since when I say no matter how good, anyway? I never did. What I questionei the tendency of systems to produce students who exam-aware smart, but stupid. If you can not just students who choose to Singapore for a map of South Asia, forget the world, or you can tell when it was independent of Singapore, but because they do not take the story in Sec 3/4, really smart? Or just take smart? There is a difference, you know

What I was overconfident questionei use of tests to determine the classes and, therefore, that is, someone ", so called" documentary. Although examinations are accepted as a cost-effective for the execution of the judge, my problem is I think there should be all examinations and be an end in itself be evaluated eduacation person. In doing so, the system, but to produce a large number of graduates who are well. Books of the attack truck, stormed the facts reproduced from books in the examination room, never understanding the material they have learned

The system of meritocracy in which a person deserves to be ahead of the future, regardless of anything else. I know many engineers who shot called the honors did not say a screwdriver from a wrench, but where are good because they are "technical regurgitiation" above. Is it a meritocracy?

This is why I welcome the efforts of governments to "remake Singapore", and change the education system to give a more rounded education rather than focusing solely on grades. But I fear that change overnight the mindset that "all grades" already embedded in the psyche of Singapore.tt is very true that some students examine the results of the acid really smart, but to be fair to say that everyone tt Wun well. anyway, even if they did well enuf to get a scholarship to study o'seas, may not be able to manage, then, as the system is not based on the UNI book.

It is really moving back tt Moe away from these practices. yet, it will take many years b4 widely accepted by all parents. TYS is the concept of deep in the minds of parents.

My only complaint is some tt, perhaps, the MOE may allow a way to slow learners to be "current" in the elite group of students preparing for leadership positions ahead. U can communicate with students the SEC PRI 2 and 4, but also with the "weaker" students do well in the scholarship programs, if they can approve it. Slowness in learning does not equal stupid. Einstein was a genius slow-learning!

Take on education system for my daughter

This year I'm in my first foray into "education" so to speak. My daughter will be 7 next year, meaning that it is primary in July this year, I want to be like other parents in the country I VY place at the school for my daughter.

In recent years I had to quickly understand how the education system in Singapore, which has changed a lot since I was little.

Before I become a parent, I never thought it would be so "difficult" to get the child in my school. I had my first taste when we were choosing a daycare for our daughter. We had to put her in day care before, when she turned 3 over 1.5 years, it was too late, was already on the waiting list. I thought to myself .... really?

When I first read about how to subscribe to the school and learned quickly about who should go first. It was a little intimidating and scary. It was also the time I registered for each group of students that I have! I think better safe than sorry. Do you believe that some of the associations go up $ 1000? Investing in the future for my children, I told myself.

Just the other day at the show (AM Live!) Talked about some options in other places around the world in education. There is no perfect system, each with advantages and disadvantages. There is a very rigid structure, while others are very inexpensive approach to everything. I think we both worked before a key ingredient of fun - the parents! Education system can only do so much for your child, you should do it too. The rest is for us as parents. We teach them and help them too. We can not outsource the whole thing and go to school only part of the process.

In my opinion, we have learned much from our environment and people around us. Our parents played a major role in shaping our view of life. Many do not go to the "big" schools has proven to be good leaders. They were inspired and motivated to learn.

I hope to encourage children and motor. I hope to do, showing them the relevance of the learners, showing them that they can enjoy learning. I hope that the roughness and the peer pressure from other people and the local education system to reduce the joy of learning them. When it was all so difficult to learn.

Well, I got my head around how things work here in Singapore, and I think we'll be ok. But come July, I'm sure I'll show some nerves with other parents in the country!
